Kreyol Garden (Fon Batis) 2022-2028

The Kreyòl Garden project embraces the local expression of “Jaden Kreyòl”. The Kreyol Garden concept can play an essential role in the balance of small holder farms. It builds sustainable gardens by providing organic matter to soils and preserving moisture during dry periods by planting shade trees and other woody plants which in themselves provide value as biomass (e.g. charcoal) and commodity crops (e.g. coffee). It is part of a development system that has several stages: 1. establishment, 2. growth and multiplication and 3. stability and sustainability. It embraces scientific methods (e.g. genetic selection of seeds), creates diversity and moves in the direction of environmental restoration and resilience.

The project aims to improve the nutritional health of households in the selected area of Fon Batis, through the practices of agroforestry, food production and the processing of agricultural products. It aims to strengthen the capacities of cooperative members to develop their livelihoods and it creates marketing opportunities. It includes five phases:

  1. Training and awareness on nutritional and agroforestry practice
  2. Nutritional and food surveys
  3. Agriculture and processing of agricultural commodities including selection of crops for nutritional health and seasonal security with superior varieties
  4. Agroforestry practice including succession and transition of vegetables to fruits and woody crops
  5. Monitoring and evaluation

Water Development (Fon Batis) 2022-2023

The sanitation challenges encountered in Fon Batis are directly related to the problems of access quality of the water, which causes numerous risks of contamination and infections, in particular, sarcoptosis and typhoid among the majority of the population. Moreover, the water collected from distant supply points is not safe for human consumption. The water is not always potable; it can even be deadly given the recurrent epidemics in the country. One of the most popular water sources is the “Marianne” spring located at two hours walk to and from the source. This spring serves approximately 3,000 people in twelve (12) localities.

In the localities, water is mainly transported by women and children and sometimes by donkey, which presents high risks. The road that leads to the source has a very uneven topography that often causes people to fall, resulting in physical damage (fractures, injuries, sprains, etc.). The community has everything to gain in the realization of this project. Indeed, a peasant will say, “Si yon moun ta mennen dlo sa anlè pou nou, pa gen anyen li mande nou pou pa fè l pou li…” If someone brings us water, we will never have to ask anything more of them.” (or to put it another way, if they have water, then they will be able to take of everything else their family would need)

The objective of the project is to improve the drinking water needs of more than 1,000 families (or 7,000 men, women and children) in the 12 localities of the communal section of Fon Batis by:

  • establishing a potable water supply system through the capture of the “Marianne” spring for the 12 localities of Fon Batis
  • constructing four (4) tanks, four (4) pumping systems and a water treatment plant
  • Installing four (4) solar systems to facilitate water pumping
  • equipping the system with a distribution network guaranteeing the water to kiosks

Adult Literacy (Fon Batis) 2021-2024

This particular program  focuses on the community of Fon Batis in the communal section north of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince. The area was the site of the very first literacy pilot undertaken from 2001-2003. Members of approximately 7 cooperatives were the beneficiaries. Viewed as “risky but innovative” the pilot was funded at the time by the then-known Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). In the FIDA/pcH model, literacy is offered as a benefit to invested shareholders of a cooperative. It is a choice by members to participate. To our astonishment, membership in cooperatives tripled! The 7 cooperatives are at various levels of functioning representing approximately 3000 members, many of whom joined following 2003 and not had the benefit of literacy. In some case, husbands who declined literacy on the basis of ego, have seen the transformation of their wives and now express an interest in participating.

Total current registration for literacy 2020 is 1,561 (Men = 577/Women = 984). In Year one, only two of three levels will be offered; 1,231 (Men = 476/Women = 793) participants have been pre-tested for Level I; 296 (Men = 105/Women = 191) participants have been pre-tested for Level II. The cooperatives will select 75 locations to serve as the educational “centres”.

The objective of the  program is to strengthen the capacity of women and men farmers to enable greater trust, confidence and self-awareness for the greater benefit of families and the community. The program offers a three-level curriculum in Kreyòl with each level being a nine-month term and covers the following areas of learning:

  • Knowledge and application of the notions of oral communication, written and artistic
  • Knowledge and application of essential concepts in mathematics
  • Knowledge and skills in experimental sciences
  • Knowledge, awareness and skills related to their environment
  • Knowledge and ability in protection of the environment
  • Knowledge and ability in business management
  • Ability to transfer skills and to create wealth
  • Knowledge and ability to respect the rights of others and to perform civic duties responsibly
  • Capacity to transmit learned values
  • Ability to exercise decision-making power within groups and/or community

Cooperative-Based Health Services Pilot (Fon Batis) 2020-2023

The object of the pilot is to explore the possibility of delivering a health care service that meets the needs of a rural population and wherein the community has the capacity to support the services they so desire. The cooperative model practiced by pcH requires that ALL members be financially invested shareholders.  pcH-established cooperatives  understand the  concept of mobilizing resources and the benefits to them. Hence, members are very receptive to contributing additional funds to their cooperative to purchase land (for example) or for other cooperative-driven ventures. We anticipate this will hold true for health services.

The pilot, now its third year, focusses on eight pcH-related cooperatives in the Fon Batis area representing about 2,200 cooperative members.  To date  approximately 500 families have registered in the pilot at an annual fee of 4,300 GDE (or about $45 USD) Services presently include basic health care, a full pharmacy and lab services. The pilot also incorporates innovative telehealth technology such as the Butterfly iQ. The pilot is expected to demonstrate that agricultural cooperatives that practice the Seven Principles of Cooperative and whose members have had access to literacy have the greatest potential to support a health service system that meets their needs. It seeks to establish a service system to ensure the consistent delivery of services with the anticipation that such a model can be replicated when the above conditions are in place.

Plans are presently in the works to include an OB/GYN unit.
